THERE ARE A FEW THINGS IN LIFE THAT MAKE ANJA VERY HAPPY – HER HUSBAND AND NUTELLA RANK RIGHT UP THERE WITH SOME OF HER FAVOURITES, AS WELL AS ANY PRETTY PAPER PRODUCTS. EVER SINCE ANJA WAS SMALL SHE WOULD LINGER IN THE STATIONARY SECTION OF ANY SHOP AND DREAM OF ALL THE DIFFERENT DESIGNS SHE WOULD ONE DAY CREATE. IT WAS THEREFORE ONLY A NATURAL PROGRESSION THAT ANJA STARTED CREATING DESIGNS TO ADORN HER WALLS AND SPOIL HER FRIENDS WITH.
Both her mother and grandmother are extremely creative people and Anja’s childhood was filled with memories of crafting, messing about with paints and coming up with creations that were then handed out as gifts to unsuspecting people. Growing up in Namibia, then moving to Johannesburg, studying in Cape Town, exploring overseas a little and now settling in the Cape – Anja loves to travel, never staying still for too long.
When Anja and her husband decided to marry, she had times of her life crafting up a storm for their wedding. She drew up the invites, cut and pasted all the décor, created the wedding favours and had tons of fun in the process. It was then that she realized she wanted to be creative for a living, and so set about turning her passion into a business.
The biggest challenge for Anja was building up enough courage to start. Once she took that first step everything else seemed to fall into place. “Oh yes and admin, I really don’t like admin, give me a pen and a piece of paper and I am happy creating something, but admin…ewwww”, says Anja. She creates everything from her dining room table because she loves working from home, being able to shape and mold her day gives her an enormous amount of freedom and satisfaction. And no wonder: She also lives right at the sea!
Paper Tales started out with a couple of markets and Anja felt very fortunate as people approached her and asked if she could supply their stores. From there on other shop owners saw her products in stores, e-mailed her and now her items are all over the world. Pretty amazing! The most important thing to Anja is that she still does whatever she is passionate about. If that means she dabbles a little in watercolour, or pottery or fabric painting to satisfy her curiosity then she goes along with that. Being self taught, her style is forever developing and she is excited to see how it will change and grow in the future. Anja gets excited about her working day. Sometimes she doesn’t sleep well because there is an idea stuck in her head eager to be realized. She believes that doing something you love makes you a happier person, and would recommend following your dreams to everyone.
